Surroundings: A Neon Exhibition by Chloe Kottwitz

This September, Black Iris Art Gallery is proud to present Surroundings, a solo exhibition by neon artist and Uptown Neon founder Chloe Kottwitz. As the owner of the last operating neon workshop in Richmond, Chloe carries forward a tradition of craft while pushing the medium into bold new territory.

The exhibition marks Chloe’s largest installation of personal work to date, transforming the gallery with an immersive mix of large sculptural pieces and intimate table-top lamps. Her work bridges nostalgia and modern design—drawing on the raw energy of neon signage while reframing it as fine art. Visitors can expect glowing environments that shift the atmosphere of each room, inviting them to experience light not just as illumination, but as texture, mood, and story.

Located in the heart of Richmond’s Arts District, Black Iris Art Gallery and Social Club is a 10,000-square-foot creative hub that hosts monthly exhibitions, artist talks, and special events. With its unique combination of art gallery, private social club, cigar lounge, and live performance venue, Black Iris is where art, music, and ideas converge.

Surroundings will be on view throughout the month of September. Join us for the opening reception during First Fridays and discover the glow of Richmond’s only neon artist keeping this timeless craft alive.
